Dear Felton Library Friend —
Good news! FLF’s application for a grant from the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz has been successful! The Foundation has awarded FLF, through its parent organization, The Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Library, $5000 to assist us in getting professional advice regarding strategic planning, mobilizing our membership, and improving our methods of advocacy and communication.
Meanwhile, progress has been made on site planning during the past several months. The County planning department has been reviewing the site proposed for the new Felton branch library; FLF anticipates preliminary County approval of the site later this month. At that point, revised architectural plans and cost estimates will proceed.
We need your help for this new stage in our community effort. If you took action several years ago to keep the branch open, please consider joining us now in the work of realizing the vision of a library that truly serves the needs of the San Lorenzo Valley. Our next Steering Committee meeting is Tuesday, July 24, 4:00 p.m., at the Felton Firehouse.
An additional piece of good news is that the Joint Powers Board has voted to extend Felton and Boulder Creek branch hours so that they will be open six days a week, bringing SLV libraries up to the open hours at most neighborhood branches (44 per week). The new schedule will begin later this month.
“Access to knowledge is the superb, the supreme act of truly great civilizations. Of all the institutions that purport to do this, free libraries stand virtually alone in accomplishing this mission.” — Toni Morrison.
