Big Step Towards a New Felton Branch Library

Felton-Library-Home

The County Board of Supervisors voted on May 22 to begin the process of County
acquisition of the Verutti property next to the Felton Post Office. This decision is a huge step towards a new Felton branch library and real cause for celebration by all of us who have worked so hard on this issue for the past seven years.

The proposal by Supervisor Mark Stone was that the County draw up a "Memorandum of Understanding" with the Verutti family that allows final tests, planning approval, and legal documents to be completed and transfer of the property to the county to occur.  You can see the detailed proposal by Supervisor Stone at http://sccounty01.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/bds/Govstream/BDSvData/non_legacy/agendas/2012/20120522/PDF/024.pdf

Felton Library Friends is extremely grateful for the patience and continuing generosity of the Veruttis, who first suggested donating their property more than ten years ago.  We are also grateful to Supervisor Stone, architect Teal Messer (who has contributed to the project in countless ways), and to FLF's "citizen member" of the Joint Powers Board, Nancy Gerdt, who has worked closely with all parties to bring about this decision.

FLF members have ample reason to feel optimistic and proud of our long fight for the Felton branch and for other community branches. In the coming months, FLF will begin exploring, in collaboration with the County, library administrators and the community, how a new library building on the property will be funded. FLF anticipates that the acquisition of this property will open new doors for grants and donations, and will provide impetus to a library system that has deemed a new Felton branch to be its highest priority capital project.
