Felton Library Festival and Library Design

Dear Felton Library Friend:

Thanks to the hundreds of community members who came to Saturday's Felton Library Festival. In all ways, this second Festival was a great success: exciting, fun, and inspiring. It was an opportunity for all of us, in the San Lorenzo Valley and beyond, to celebrate our efforts to bring about the future Felton branch library.

Wonderful entertainment, food, drink, and activities were provided by over 60 volunteers. Our drawing, featuring five fantastic prizes donated by Valley businesses, was a huge success, raising almost $2500. Many people generously donated additional money for our cause. Overall, the Festival will add over $4000 to FLF's funds.

Two days after the Festival, FLF members joined with library administrators and architect Teall Messer to continue building design discussions. We are excited about the way the design, based on input from community workshops, is shaping up; our new library will have lots of light, lots of comfortable space for users of all ages, a fine community meeting room, and a courtyard. It will be situated to make ideal use of the building site so generously offered to the Library system in 2002.

Money raised by Felton Library Friends helps us prepare for the future. During the past year, FLF benefited from the advice of several consultants, on such topics as event planning, fundraising, and strategy. Once the Santa Cruz Public Library system commits to the core funding for the new branch, FLF will embark on community fundraising for furnishings, artwork, and other features that will go beyond the basics and make our new library a true gem in the San Lorenzo Valley.

Please consider coming to a Steering Committee meeting to join in planning for the future. We meet each month on the 4th Tuesday, 4:00 p.m., at the Felton Firehouse. For more information, go to www.feltonlibraryfriends.org.

I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library. ~Jorge Luis Borges
